An explosion leaves cargo ship “Herald Petrel” helplessly floating in space, and Captain Harold Galahad is confronted with a situation very similar to the one that made him quit active duty years ago. He was only meant to be the replacement captain for this one flight. He knows barely anything about the ship and his crew, but now, the emergency demands him to be something he never wanted to be again – a real captain.
“Forget the guidelines, and be those young, imaginative minds again, come up with your brilliant ideas and come up with them, now, because now we need them.”
Captain Harold Galahad, speech to the crew, April 17, 2522
While Captain Galahad has to deal with the aftermath of the explosion – and his own memories – he soon discovers that more things went wrong, here. The crew acts strange, his first officer is less than helpful and the more he finds out, the more he has to challenge his own beliefs in a system he fared well with, until now.
